Sri Ramanuja Kshetram

The Dream Of  The Two Great Acharyas

Sri Injimedu Azhagiyasingar, the 42nd Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt, at the request of the Srivaishnavites of Mumbai, purchased a plot in Chembur, Mumbai as early as 1948 in order to have a branch of Sri Ahobila Mutt and a place of worship for the Mumbaikars. His successor Sri Devanarvilagam Azhagiyasingar, the 43rd Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt, during his Vijaya Yatra in the year 1956, came to Chembur and inspected the plot and blessed that a great temple would be built therein. His Holiness purchased the adjacent plot to build a big Hall to accommodate holding various functions of the temple.

The dream of the above two great Acharyas was fulfilled by Sri Mukkur Azhagiyasingar, the 44th Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt by building a beautiful temple complex at the site. His Holiness named the place as “Sri Ramanuja Kshetram”. The Temple added more and more unique features under the auspicious directions of His Holiness Sri Villvalam Azhagiyasingar, the 45th Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt and His Holiness Sri Tirukkudanthai Azhagiyasingar, the present 46th Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt.

This Kshetra is considered to be unique because this was consecrated by Azhagiyasingars of Sri Ahobila Mutt, the 600 year old institution with presiding deity Sri Malola (Sri Lakshminrusimha idol of Vedadhri Hill of Sri Ahobilam). The first Mahasamprokshanam was held on 25th August, 1968 at the hands of Sri Mukkur Azhagiyasingar (the 44th Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt). The temple had three moolavar vigrahams of Sri Lakshmi Nrusimhan, Sri Lakshmi Narayanan and Sri Lakshmi Hayagreevan and Utsavamurthy of Sri Prahalada Varadan with Sri Devi and Boodavi and Sri Andal, Sri Namalwar, Sri Bhashyakarar, Swami Desikan and Sri Adivan Satakopa Swamy.

The temple was renovated and the second Mahasamprokshanam was held on 11th July, 2005 at the hands of Sri Lakshmi Nrusimha Divya Padukas Sevaka Srivan Satakopa Sri Narayana Yatendra Mahadesikan (the 45th Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt). During the second Mahasamprokshanam the Utsava Vigrahams of all the Azhagiyasingars namely from 42nd Jeer to 45th Jeer, who were instrumental in the making of this temple and Sri Thirumangai Alwar, who had made the Prabandham for Sri Lakshmi Nrusimhan of Sri Ahobilam, were also added.

As ordained by His Holiness the 45th Srimad Azhagiyasingar a separate Sannidhi for Thayar was constructed and the Mahasamprokshanam of the Sannidhi for Thayar was done at the hands of His Holiness the 45th Jeer on 9th February, 2007. With the advent of the temple, the temple became very famous and more and more devotees started coming and participated in the many aradhas. With their blessings the temple grew to the support of the devotees many brass and silver items were donated. It was at this time that one of the most important functions of the temple was due to Thayar’s anugraham.

Mahasamprokshanam of the Swarna Vimanam of the Thayar Sannidhi held on 21st January, 2010. The temple has the beautiful Swarna Vimanam for the Thayar Sannidhi and Swarna Thayar in the outer compound of the Sannidhi visible in the front for giving the blessings to all those who pass by the temple.

His Holiness the 46th Azhagiyasingar had ordained to construct a Sannidhi for Sri Dhanvantri Bhagvan for giving His blessings to Mumbaikars to get rid of all diseases. A new sannidhi was constructed for Sri Dhanvantri Bhagvan and consecrated on 9th November 2014 in a grand manner. This is the first sannidhi for Sri Dhanvantri Bhagvan in Mumbai city. Since then the inflow of devotees to the temple has increased manifold.

The temple annually celebrates Sri Nrusimha Jayanti Utsavam (spread over 11 days), Navaratri Utsavam and Adayana Utsavam in a grand manner. The temple also celebrates all the Alwars and Acharyas Thirunakshatrams and the Thirunakshatrams of Srimad Azhagiyasingars. This temple is well known in Mumbai and many devotees visit even from far off places to have the blessings.
